Colorado Affiliate of the ACNM Annual Research Scholarship Award


Application deadline: November 10, 2025


Purpose:                      The purpose of the Colorado Affiliate Scholarship Award is to advance knowledge about women's health related to Certified Nurse-Midwife/Certified Midwife practice.


Award:                         Up to $3000 award


Award Date:                 December 10, 2025


Criteria:                       Only applications that meet the following criteria will be considered:

·       The proposal is directly related to midwifery practice.

·       The project utilizes qualitative and/or quantitative research methodology or a recognized evidence-based practice model.

·       Completion of the project is possible in a one-year period.


Eligibility:              1)   The Principal Investigator/Project Director must be a CNM/CM. All co-investigators/co-applicants must be members of ACNM national and the ACNM Colorado Affiliate.

2)     Student midwives may apply but must have a letter of support from a supervising faculty mentor.

3)     Interdisciplinary research is encouraged.

4)     Proposals will be evaluated based upon merit; however, priority consideration will be given to individuals who have not previously received the award.

5)     If a member of the ACNM Colorado Affiliate Research Committee desires to apply, s/he must recluse her/himself from the sub-committee responsible for reviewing applications.

6)     IRB approval is not required at the time of application but is required (as appropriate) before work on the proposed project commences.


Review criteria:           1)   A sub-committee of the ACNM Colorado Affiliate Research

Committee composed of three CNM/CMs will be convened to review applications. These CNM/CMs will be doctorally prepared or have significant research experience. In the case that three qualified CNM/CMs are not available, qualified CNM/CMs from another ACNM affiliate may be recruited to serve as reviewers.

                                       2)  The review committee will be blinded to the applicants.

                                       3)  Applicants are to adhere to application guidelines when

                                             completing their application. Reviewers will assess the extent to

                                             which applicants have adhered to application guidelines. Reviewers

      may decline to review applications not meeting application

      guidelines.

                                    4)   The following criteria will guide reviewer assessment of project

      quality and merit for award.

 

Relevance

·       Will the proposed project contribute to knowledge of women's health and/or nurse-midwifery practice?

·       Is the proposed project consistent with the purpose of the grant?

·       Does the proposed project address a gap in knowledge or practice with respect to the grant purpose?


Quality

·       Is the project design sound, including the work plan and qualifications of the personnel who will carry it out (project director and others)?

·       Does the detailed budget reflect required resources and clearly describe how funds from this grant will be used?

·       If the proposed work is a component of a larger project, has the applicant provided reasonable assurances that the larger project will not pose barriers to accomplishing the proposed work?

·       Does the proposal adhere to application guidelines?

 


Conditions:                1) The awardee is expected to report plans and timeline for dissemination

                                          of the work supported by this research award at the end of the award

                                          period. This may involve publishing results in a peer-reviewed journal

                                          or professional newsletter, presenting results at professional    meetings, and/or posting relevant information online, as appropriate.  

                                   2) Awardees are strongly encouraged to present work at ACNM-    

                                          sponsored local and national meetings whenever possible.

                                   2)  Any publications or presentations must acknowledge support of the      research by the ACNM Colorado Affiliate.

                                   3) Upon completion of the project, the awardee must submit an abstract,

                                         plans for dissemination, and a report of use of funds awarded to the

                                      Colorado Affiliate of the ACNM Research Committee.

 

APPLICATION GUIDELINES


General:                     Carefully read these instructions and provide all information requested. The application must be submitted electronically as a .doc or .docx file. Pages must be sequentially ordered using the supplied face sheet as a cover sheet. Only applications submitted by the application deadline will be considered. Applications not meeting the deadline for submission or these style requirements will not be accepted. Applicants should retain the email reply received after submission of their application.


Style/Format:             Typefaces must be Arial or Times New Roman font, at least 11-point size, and pages must be double-spaced with one-inch margins. Pages must be numbered sequentially beginning with the application face sheet.


Deadline:                    Completed applications, including attachments, must be received by November 10, 2025. Applicants will be notified of the status of their application by December 10, 2025.

Application Contents:  Complete applications must include the following components in the order specified:


                                   Application Face Sheet (see form attached below). This must include a Project Abstract (200 word maximum) providing a brief yet comprehensive description of the proposed project.


Narrative Project Description. The narrative project description must be limited to 10 double-spaced pages, and include the following elements:

o   Problem/Significance                      

o   Goals /Objectives

o   Project Description (methods, design, sampling, etc.)

o   Planned Timeline for Implementation

o   Evaluation Plan

o   Dissemination Plan


Reference List. Up to 30 references may be included in the reference list, but only if they are needed to support the project proposal. References must be provided in APA (7th edition) format.


Curriculum Vitae. The CV of all project participants must be included. Please limit each CV to five (5) pages and include material relevant to the proposed project.


Letter(s) of Support/Recommendation (midwifery student applicants ONLY). Obtain and include a letter of support from a supervising midwifery or other faculty mentor that addresses the applicant's ability to carry out the proposed work. This letter should include the applicant's relevant qualifications and experience, any available institutional support, and the relationship of the proposed project to other related work (if applicable).


Budget Guidelines:    Applicants must submit a one-page budget (budget form attached below). Please indicate the total direct costs requested for the specified period Include a budget narrative identifying how the funds will be used and demonstrate that the proposed work can be carried out with the available funds. Funds may be applied toward direct costs such as expenses for research assistant services, data analysis services, costs associated with participating in relevant training courses, expenses associated with a pilot research study, or production costs of educational or training material. Monies may not be allocated for administrative indirect costs.
